32nd Annual US National Toboggan Championship

Every independent ski area that we work with is a unique gem, with its own distinctive facets and qualities. This weekend we had the pleasure of visiting The Camden Snow Bowl , down east in Camden, Maine. Their tagline is "Ski By The Sea", because the summit gives great views of Penobscot Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Perhaps their greatest claim to fame is hosting the US National Toboggan Championships. Kim Shulver and Charles Von Thun signed up as contestants to share in the fun and drive for glory. And the fun was non-stop. After the first day of racing was cancelled due to the polar vortex (and way sub-zero temps), the racers all converged on the mountain hauling their toboggans. There are obvious veterans of the event who tailgate, have awesome team names, and plenty of noobs who have this event on their bucket list.

Since the average run is not much more than ten seconds, there is plenty of time to meet your fellow sledders, and talk about everything. The camaraderie and love for outdoor sports is obvious and engaging. If you check the leaderboard you'll find the Sky Flyers was not quite middle of the pack. But who cares. We got to experience Camden Snow Bowl and the USNTC at its finest. Many thanks to Beth and Holly's great hospitality.
